Senior Underwater Acoustics Specialist / Technical Lead

DHI is seeking an experienced Senior Underwater Acoustics Specialist / Technical Lead to join our internationally recognized environmental and offshore consultancy team. In this role, you will provide technical leadership on consulting and research projects focused on underwater noise, offshore wind, marine construction, and environmental impact assessment.
You will work with multidisciplinary teams of engineers, environmental specialists, and scientists to deliver innovative and scientifically robust solutions that support sustainable development of marine infrastructure projects worldwide.
Key responsibilities
- Lead underwater noise assessments for offshore wind, marine construction, geophysical surveys, and related offshore activities.
- Design and execute underwater acoustic modelling studies.
- Support Environmental Impact Assessments (EIAs), permitting processes, and regulatory submissions.
- Interpret and assess acoustic measurement data from monitoring campaigns.
- Contribute to technical reports, scientific publications, conference presentations, and expert guidance documents.
- Provide technical guidance on underwater noise regulations, monitoring strategies, and mitigation measures.
- Support quality assurance and technical review of project deliverables.
- Develop technical proposals and contribute to business development activities.
- Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams of environmental specialists, engineers, and scientists.
Required qualifications
- MSc or PhD in Acoustics, Mechanical Engineering, Physics, Ocean Engineering, Marine Science, Applied Mathematics, or a related discipline.
- Strong understanding of underwater sound generation, propagation, and measurement.
- Experience with numerical modelling and environmental assessment of marine noise.
- Programming and data-analysis skills (Python, MATLAB, R, or similar).
- Excellent technical writing and communication skills.
- Ability to translate complex scientific concepts into practical recommendations for clients and regulators.
- Ability to work effectively under uncertainty and develop robust solutions where data or established methodologies are limited.
Desirable qualifications
- Experience with offshore wind environmental assessments.
- Familiarity with marine mammal impact assessment methodologies.
- Knowledge of underwater noise mitigation strategies, including source reduction measures, operational mitigation, noise abatement systems, monitoring-based mitigation, and adaptive management approaches for offshore activities.
- Experience with acoustic monitoring systems and field campaigns.
- Track record of scientific publications or conference presentations.
- Experience developing innovative assessment approaches for emerging technical or regulatory challenges.
